on November 17, 2013WOMAN AND CHILD IN THE AMAZON BASIN: Taken in 1999, some 50 miles from Manaus, while on a site visit to a Brazilian investigation using NASA satellites and ground-based measurements to study the impact of deforestation. This house stood on stilts to avoid the occasional flooding of the Amazon. The next picture shows nearby houses that are actually afloat, giving some context. The people in this area either work on farms owned by others or in some aspect of the fishing trade. Her pensive look suggest a longing for the abundant life that she no doubt sees on trips to Manaus. But there is little hope of getting there.
