Yakutsk
(Note that I assigned the geolocation of these images years after they were shot. Many are approximate, and some may be dead wrong! Although I know the name of the hotel, current web sites provide two different addresses and perhaps 3 locations spread over 5-10 miles!)
Ed and me in front of the Permafrost Institute and a model of a mammoth. I visited this institute as part of the scientific discussions as to how we wold utilize the satellite data in possibly joint projects. The visit featured a fascinating visit to their tunnel into the permafrost, and a lengthy discourse (in Russian, with minimal interpretation) on Permafrost by the director of the institute. He talked for over an hour, and I learned quite a few interesting things about permafrost, but it was way more than my jet-lagged (and vodka-soaked?) brain could encompass. I nearly fell asleep in his face, but when he ended his long discourse I politely asked a small question to show interest. That launched him into another 30 minute lecture, with no pauses for breathing. I probably did fall asleep, but later vowed to be careful about asking polite questions of over-bearing speakers.
